To be honest, much of my "random" rolls have been just that: random, with not many patterns or decent images. However, I did notice one general trend in that I tend to be partial to iconography - patterns, symbols, text, etc. - which is something that has always drawn me in aesthetically. With the most recent roll, inspired by some of the assigned subject rolls, I explored a secluded clearing on the south side. The environment and single object rolls especially have gotten me interested in abandoned, empty places. While this subject is still very new to me I am slowly becoming enamored with environments and places "past their prime" - isolated and forgotten. I guess with some regards to my personal life I am drawn to the idea of 'desolation' in general, and I think this is an interesting avenue through which to channel that fascination. On this roll I also experimented with self portraiture which was a totally foreign concept to me, and something I had previously been uncomfortable with. While the shoot didn't come out exactly as I was envisioning, it was altogether an interesting fusion of some recent ideas, and something I definitely want to continue to attempt in future projects.
For me, Nicholas Prior's
Age of Man series has been a constant source of both inspiration as well as some of my most favorite photographs. While not directly related content-wise to the abandoned places idea that I mentioned earlier, I think each image from the series illustrates a very discomforting sense of isolated detachment which corresponds to the overall concept I have been considering.
