Irving Penn

We talked about Irving Penn in class and I used him for a previous blog assignment we've done for this class, but I wanted to make this post on him because I love the way in which all of his portraits are composed and lit. I love how his portraits sometimes become more about the lighting on the subject rather than the subject itself. As we mentioned in class, his careful placement of light creates an amazing balance in all of his photographs.

  1. I really love Irvin's amount of contrast in his black and white photography. It makes the subjects really pop.

  2. I almost think there is a little too much contrast. It almost takes away from the detail in the subject. For example the man's hair and shirt. The only part that I really appreciate is the black line that shows the outline of his nose. I think that really sticks out to me as an important part of the composition.
