While going through my random rolls, I had a hard time noticing a consistent trend among the images. So, rather than guessing, I asked some of my peers what they thought and what trends they saw. The two most common answers I heard that I agreed with are that I tend to lean towards portraiture and following the grunge that gives Richmond its' character. The cool thing about asking my peers of what they saw, was that I never noticed how habitually I follow Richmond's grimy and dirty attributes. From graffiti on walls and television sets, to the hardcore scene that lays unknown to many of VCU's students, to needles and bras in an alleyway, my contact sheets prove that I have a weird fascination for documenting Richmond's finest qualities. Portraiture on the other hand, is something I've always been quite fond of and I'm not surprised that people noticed that in my pictures.
By going through my images, I'm starting to consider ideas to push what I enjoy documenting further. Through one of our previous film roll assignments, I definitely learned a lot about seeing light and shadows and how they can contribute to an image. So, all in all, that is definitely something I would really like to focus on learning more about. I think after practicing more with light techniques, especially natural ones, I would definitely make a few attempts at combining those other two aspects of my recent photography.
For an ultimate consistent idea laid out in several images, I would definitely like to continue my focus on human's and their spirit and nature. One day, I'd like to get the guts to ask to be invited into people's homes and see their private environments. Documenting strangers was difficult for me, but I've found that those images are the ones I enjoy most. So, I plan to follow the documentation of unposed strangers around me while also paying more attention to lighting and compositional aspects. I also plan to make attempts at being welcome inside stranger's homes and documenting their lives inside, even if that means some images will end up unavoidably posed.
I always look towards the likes of James Nachtwey and Eugene Richards for inspiration regarding human nature.
