3 Photographers Noelani Likes

Artist 1: Annie Leibovitz

I like Annie Leibovitz’s work because of the lighting she uses. Her subjects are most often lit naturally, or look as if they’re lit naturally. This photo of Nicole Kidman really feels intimate because she’s casually sitting on a bed and it looks as if sunlight is streaming through a window illuminating her pale skin in great contrast to her black sweater.

Artist 2: David LaChapelle

I like David LaChapelle’s work because of the bold colors and unabashed subject matter he covers. He’s not afraid to depict taboo sexual matters, or poke fun at Christianity. In this photo, the bright in-your-face colors accentuate both the dramatic gestures of the figures and the comical comparison between religion and gang culture. In short, the lighting, set, and subject matter compliment and inform one another creating a strong thematic image.

Artist 3: Richard Avedon

I like Richard Avedon’s work because it’s clean, well-posed, high contrast, black and white photography. Avedon has created a perfectly balanced composition with the dancer slightly offset to the right, and her pale skin contrasting with black feathers/fur. The dancer’s head is tilted back matching the swirling direction of the feathers/fur, creating a sense of movement. This photo doesn’t feel stiff or posed, and the dancer’s vivacity is clear even without her actually dancing.

  1. These are also three of my favorite photographers. I really like the Avedon image that you chose. It feels effortless and that is part of what I believe made him such a brilliant photographer. The composition of this image works so well and I'm drawn to the shadows created under her chin and on her neck.

  2. I absolutely love this group that you have chosen. Each photographer is so different compared to the other, it create a large spectrum on showing what photographers today are all about. I have always loved Leibovitez even thought I am not a huge fan of her large use of celebrities, she makes up for it for just being a good goddamn photographer.

  3. Yamariah Walters: The work of Annie Leibovitz is breath-taking. Her work as you stated uses a great deal of natural lighting. Through natural lighting she is bringing out the essence of Nicole Kidman. She is bringing out her true beauty. Not only through this photograph but htrough many of her others Ms. Leibovitz connects us with her subject. It alomost feels like we are there, we see what they see and we feel what they feel. Through lighting see connects us, through contrasting she connects us, and through her use of composition she connects us. We aren't just viewing the piece we are a part of it.

  5. I feel like the picture you posted for david lachapelle was one of his stronger pieces, and I enjoy the amount of thought that went into the picture. The content is still highly relevant and I feel the way he is depicting gang culture is an important asset in understanding why gangs function like they do.

  6. Tito, your comment caught my attention because it illustrates an ever-present idiosyncrasy of art. You see LaChapelle's image and think it depicts gang culture and how gangs function. I see this image and think the gang comparison reflects the way Christianity functions. One image, and a multitude of interpretations.
