Just recently, I happened upon the amazing work of Larry Towell. In all three of Towell's moving images below, he manages to use something other than the human face to inflict the mood on a photograph. In the first one, the raw, almost unsettling angle of the image is what makes me feel moved. Not necessarily in a good way, either, as I'm sure because of the combination of the angle and the movement within the picture, the uncomfortable feeling I have when I see this picture grows. In the second image, it's difficult to even notice a human in the photograph, as the dogs howling gesture is far more attention grabbing. However, Towell manages to yet again create an unsettling and concerned tone within the image that definitely has a large effect on me. In the third and final image, despite the dozen faces peering towards the camera, Towell again grabs the eeriness through the angle and focal point. This photograph moves me especially because I felt something immediately after seeing the photograph. Towell's photography is moving and memorable to me because the majority of them make me feel something, whether it be uncomfortable, happy, or concerned, they are all able to inflict some sort of emotion on me that I normally have a hard time finding. I will continue to look into Towell's work and follow his photography.
